What is 3mm aluminum sheet?

3mm aluminum sheet is a flat-rolled aluminum sheet with a thickness of 3mm (0.12 inches), silvery white, made of 1050, 3003, 5052, 5083, 6061, 6063, 7075 and other alloys, with both light weight (density 2.7g/cm³) and high strength (tensile strength 70-310MPa). It is widely used in building curtain walls, transportation, machinery manufacturing, and other fields.

Main Features

  • Moderate strength: Compared with 1mm thin aluminum plate, 3mm thickness makes its tensile strength and compressive strength higher, and its deformation resistance is stronger.
  • Adjustable hardness: According to the alloy series and heat treatment state, the hardness can vary from soft to hard.
  • Plastic formability: With moderate thickness, it can be processed into complex shapes through bending, stamping, stretching and other processes, and requires greater processing force than thin plates.
  • Welding and cutting: Suitable for welding methods such as argon arc welding and resistance welding. It is not easy to deform during cutting and is suitable for mechanical processing such as drilling and milling.
  • Corrosion resistance: 3mm aluminum plates made of pure aluminum (1 series) or rust-proof aluminum (3 series, 5 series) have excellent corrosion resistance in the atmosphere, fresh water and other environments, and are suitable for outdoor or humid scenes.
  • Beautiful and diverse: It can be processed by calendering, brushing, polishing, coating, anodizing, spraying, electroplating, etc. to improve the texture and performance, such as anti-oxidation and wear resistance after anodizing.
  • Lightweight electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity: The density of 3mm aluminum plate is about 2.7g/cm³, which is about 65% lighter than steel plate (density 7.85g/cm³). The thermal conductivity and electrical conductivity can be used in electronic and thermal equipment.
  • Appropriate cost: The thickness is moderate, and the raw material and processing costs are more economical than ultra-thin or ultra-thick aluminum plates, with high cost performance.

Common 10 grades of aluminum sheets

  • 1050: Purity is about 99.5%, excellent ductility, low hardness, excellent electrical and thermal conductivity, good corrosion resistance but low strength.
  • 1060: Purity is about 99.6%, the most commonly used grade of pure aluminum, plasticity is better than 1050, weldability is good, and can be anodized.
  • 1100: Contains a small amount of iron and silicon (purity ≥99.0%), strength is slightly higher than 1060, formability is good, and can be hardened.
  • 2024: Contains about 4% copper, heat treatment strengthening (T3/T4 state), high strength, good toughness, but poor corrosion resistance (surface treatment required).
  • 3003: Contains about 1% manganese, strong corrosion resistance (better than pure aluminum), good formability, cannot be strengthened by heat treatment, and good weldability.
  • 5052: Contains about 2.5% magnesium, resistant to seawater and salt spray corrosion, medium strength, hardness increases after hardening, and weldability is good.
  • 5083: Contains about 4.5% magnesium, has the highest strength among the 5 series, has strong resistance to intergranular corrosion, can be welded, and is resistant to low temperatures (maintains performance at -200°C).
  • 6061: Contains silicon and magnesium (Mg2Si phase), can be heat-treated and strengthened (high strength in T6 state), has excellent comprehensive performance, good corrosion resistance, and is easy to process.
  • 6063: The magnesium and silicon content is lower than 6061, with excellent extrusion performance, beautiful appearance after anodizing, and medium strength.
  • 7075: Contains zinc, magnesium, and copper, heat-treated and strengthened (T6 state), with strength close to that of steel (tensile strength ≥500MPa), but poor corrosion resistance (requires coating protection).

Uses

  • Construction field: The aluminum alloy curtain wall panels of office buildings and airport terminals are mostly 3 series and 6 series aluminum plates that are anodized or fluorocarbon sprayed.
  • Indoor decoration: 1 series pure aluminum or 3 series aluminum plates can be used for ceilings, partitions, decorative lines, door and window frames, and roofs, and 5 series aluminum plates can be used to make roof waterproofing boards.
  • Aerospace: 2024 and 7075 high-strength aluminum plates are used to make aircraft fuselage skins, 1 series pure aluminum is used to make interior parts, and 5 series aluminum plates are used to make fuel tanks.
  • Automobile transportation: used for railway carriage shells, subway ventilation, yacht shells, ship interiors, as well as engine hoods, doors, chassis parts, etc.
  • Electronic product shells: 6061 and 7075 aluminum plates are used to make mobile phone and computer shells. 1 series pure aluminum is used to make CPU radiators. 1060 pure aluminum is used for conductive materials such as cable trays and distribution cabinets.
  • Packaging and containers: 1235 and 8011 aluminum foils are used for food packaging such as chocolate and medicines. 3004 aluminum plate is used for pots and beverage cans. 5052 aluminum is used for chemical storage tanks, pipes, etc.
  • Billboards and sports: 3 series aluminum plates can be screen printed or sprayed for outdoor billboard panels. 6061-T6 is used for bicycle racks, 7075 is used for golf club heads, trekking poles, and camping cookers.

  • Industrial equipment: 6061 aluminum plates are used for machine tool protective covers and instrument housings. 7075 aluminum plates are used for stamping die pads, and 6 series aluminum plates are used for mechanical parts brackets.
  • Energy and environmental protection: 6063-T6 aluminum plates are used for photovoltaic brackets and battery panel frames. 1 series pure aluminum is used for busbars in power equipment, and 3003 aluminum plates are used as heat exchangers.

Work hardening state

The state (Temper) of the aluminum plate indicates its degree of work hardening and heat treatment, which directly affects the mechanical properties and uses. The following are common states.

  • O (annealed): After complete annealing, internal stress is eliminated and the softest state is reached. Excellent ductility, easy to form by deep drawing, bending and other forming processes. Lowest strength and low hardness.
  • H12: 1/4 hard state, light cold rolling work hardening, hardness between O and H14. The tensile strength is slightly higher than the O state, retaining a certain degree of formability.
  • H14: Semi-hard state, moderate cold rolling hardening, significantly improved strength, balanced strength and formability, and can be moderately bent.
  • H16: 3/4 hard state, higher degree of cold rolling hardening, close to full hard state. High strength, low ductility; special tools are required for processing.
  • H18: Full hard state, maximum cold rolling hardening, no annealing, highest strength, but almost no ductility, easy to crack.
  • H32: Stabilization treatment, low temperature annealing (stabilization) after cold rolling to eliminate some stress. The strength is close to H12, but the stress corrosion resistance is stronger.

Basic heat treatment state

  • T1: Natural aging. Medium strength, retains some work hardening effect. Cool naturally after hot working and age at room temperature.
  • T4: Solution treatment + natural aging, high strength, good ductility, but not as stable as T6. Quench after heating to solution temperature, and then leave at room temperature for several days.
  • T5: Artificial aging. Improved strength, but lower than T6. Artificial aging directly after hot working. No solution.
  • T6: Solution treatment + high temperature artificial aging. Highest strength, good corrosion resistance.
  • T7: Overaging. Sacrifice some strength, improve dimensional stability, and stress corrosion resistance.

Manufacturing process

  • Casting: Casting molten aluminum into large slabs, DC casting.
  • Hot rolling: The slabs are heated and rolled to medium thickness, about 6 mm.
  • Cold rolling: Further rolling to 3 mm, with precise thickness control as per customer requirements.
  • Annealing: Heat treatment to soften the sheet, O tempering if required.
  • Finishing: Cutting, surface treatment, anodizing/spraying, etc., and quality control inspection.
